The Prince & Meghan Diaries: Coming to the Finals after a Season in the Life with Buckingham Palace and Oprah Winfrey

The decision to quit the royal institution was made by Prince Harry and his wife, the former Rachel, as their highly anticipated documentary series threatens to deepen the split with Buckingham Palace.

The first three episodes of the project, titled “Harry & Meghan,” were released on Thursday after months of speculation that the couple would star in a tell-all series.

They detail the pair’s initial romance and Meghan’s first exposure to the structures and demands of royal life, as well as Harry’s childhood, the pervasive nature of Britain’s tabloid media and the death of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.

Buckingham and Kensington Palaces will likely be braced for the fallout from the series, after sustained tensions between Harry and his father, King Charles, and brother, Prince William.

“It’s really hard to look back on it now and go, what on earth happened? Like how did we end up here?,” Harry said in a video diary shown in the first episode, recorded shortly after the pair finished their final royal duties in March 2020.

He said that he became concerned for the safety of his family because they were being followed by the media.

Harry took aim at the media within the first few minutes of the show. “No one knows that full truth. We know the full truth, the institution knows the full truth, and the media knows the full truth because they’ve been in on it,” Harry said. He said he has a responsibility to uncover exploitation and bribes in the media.

The series comes over a year and a half after the couple’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, which contained a flurry of criticisms of members of the royal family and caused turmoil at the palace.

It marks a first major public relations test for the monarchy under King Charles III, who himself has been tacitly criticized by Harry since their split from the family, and whose relationship with his son has frayed.

The Duke and the Duchess are starring in a six part docu-series that was released on Thursday but Buckingham Palace isn’t commenting.

The couple have spoken before about the constraints placed on them while members of the royal family, and that frustration re-emerged repeatedly in the documentary.

Meghan described her engagement announcement in 2017 as an “orchestrated reality show.” Harry told the story of how other members of the royal family were not able to share his concern due to the media fascination with the prince.

“As far as a lot of the family were concerned, everything that she was being put through, they had been put through as well. It was almost like a ritual, Harry said. My wife had a similar experience, so why shouldn’t your girlfriend have the same treatment? Why should you get special treatment? He summarized their arguments and wondered why she should be protected.

When Meghan began to face negative media attention, Ragland recalled telling her daughter “this is about race,” with Meghan replying: “Mommy, I don’t want to hear that.”

“These are the skeletons in the closet that frequently make an unwelcome appearance in daily life in this family – sometimes, you know, you’re part of the problem rather than part of the solution and there is a huge level of unconscious bias,” Harry said.

“The thing with unconscious bias – it is actually no one’s fault. He said that once it was pointed out, or identified, you need to make it right.

In a telling section on his experience of other royal marriages, Harry said: “I think for so many people in the family, especially the men, there can be a temptation or an urge to marry someone who would fit the mold, as opposed to somebody who you perhaps are destined to be with.

He said that they were surprised by the fact that he was dating an American actress. The actress issue was the most funnily enough.

This is very similar to my mother, who is like much of what she is. She has the same compassion, she has the same empathy, she has the same confidence, she has this warmth about her,” said Harry.

The breakdown of her relationship with her father was explained over a scandal about whether he staged a series of photos for the sake of his son’s wedding.

“Of course, it’s incredibly sad what happened – she had a father before this and now she doesn’t have a father. And I shouldered that because if Meg wasn’t with me then her dad would still be her dad,” Harry said.

The first three episodes were released on Thursday, with three more scheduled for next week. Interviews were completed a month before the Queen died, according to the series.

“Meg and I had met through Instagram. I was looking at my feed. Someone who was a friend had this video of the two of them with the like Snapchat thing … like dog ears.” Harry said: “I was like, who is that?”

Harry was so scared that he freaked out. I started sweating. Unaware of this, Meghan began to doubt that the date would go anywhere, thinking he might have an “ego.”

They described how when they traveled to Africa in August of 2016 to join Harry, they had already met him twice before.

He recalled learning as a young child how to handle the attention, saying: “Within the family, within the system, the advice that’s always given is ‘don’t react. Don’t feed into it.

This was highlighted by the video of family ski holidays. In one scene, Harry and his siblings are made to pose for a bunch of photographers in exchange for privacy later on in the holiday. After that, his mother confronted the photographer after seeing another intrusive clip.

Harry brought up the now discredited 1995 Panorama interview with his mother, Princess Diana. While he acknowledged that she had been “deceived,” he said that she had spoken “the truth.”

He witnessed the pain and suffering of women marrying into this institution as a child. He added: “What happened to my mum … I didn’t want history to repeat itself.”

I accept there will be people all around the world who don’t agree with what I’ve done. I knew I needed to do everything I could to protect my family after what happened to my mother.

Describing the early years of her daughter’s childhood, Ragland – who is African American – recalled repeatedly being asked if she was the nanny as her daughter’s skin was lighter.

Oblivious to royal protocol, she said she was “barefoot” and wearing ripped jeans at the time. She described herself as a “hugger,” but said that this can be “jarring” for some British people.

“I guess I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside,” she said. “That formality carries over on both sides, and that was surprising to me.”

Meghan recalled being told that she would have to curtsy, while Harry said: “How do you explain that you bow to your grandmother? And that you all need to curtsy. Especially to an American. That’s weird.”

He stated that members of his family were impressed, but were uncertain about their background and thought that her being a Hollywood actress meant that this wouldn’t last.
