David P. Pelosi, the Man alleged to have Attacked Nancy Pelesi, is expected to appear in a San Francisco court on Tuesday
The man alleged to have attacked Paul Pelosi, husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is expected in a San Francisco court on Tuesday for his arraignment.
David DePape is facing state charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon according to the San Francisco District Attorney. These charges are in addition to the federal charges DePape faces, which include assault and attempted kidnapping.
We will file a complaint and he will be in court tomorrow, we expect him to be there, but no further information is available at this time.
“Yes, it appears as though this was, based on his statements and comments that were made in that house during his encounter with Mr. Pelosi, that this was politically motivated,” she said.
According to a federal affidavit, the accused, David DePape, who is due to be arraigned Tuesday, told investigators that he planned to kidnap the third-ranking federal official and break “her kneecaps” if she lied. In her absence, he said, her husband Paul Pelosi ended up “taking the punishment instead” as he allegedly struck the 82-year-old on the head with a hammer, fracturing his skull.
“Since the horrific attack on Paul early Friday, we have been deluged with thousands of messages conveying concern, prayers and warm wishes. We are most grateful,” the statement said.
A press release from the office of Nancy Pelosi said that Paul Pelosi had undergone successful surgery to repair a skull fracture, and that he also had serious injuries to his arm and hands.
There is a detailed account of Paul Pelosi’s call to the emergency room included in the court filing about federal charges against DePape.
Pelosi said that the male in the house was going to wait for his wife and that there was a male in the home. Pelosi further conveyed that he does not know who the male is. An FBI agent in a sworn affidavit said that a male named David said his name.
“When the door was opened, Pelosi and DePape were both holding a hammer with one hand and DePape had his other hand holding onto Pelosi’s forearm,” the affidavit said. “Pelosi greeted the officers. The officers asked them what was going on. DePape said everything was good. Officers then asked Pelosi and DePape to drop the hammer.”
The Paul Pelosi hammer and underwear: Politics of domestic violent extremism and copycat attacks in the U.S.
“There’s no place for it in this country,” Mayorkas said in his first remarks since the attack last week, adding that it was difficult to label the incident “domestic terrorism” because of the legal implications of the term.
Asked if he was worried about copycat attacks, Mayorkas said, domestic violent extremism is “one of the greatest terrorism-related” threats to the US, noting that DHS tracks the threat environment and pushes information out to state and local law enforcement authorities, so they are alert to the threat.
“It is not impossible to protect our kids at school. They act like it is. Nancy Pelosi gets protection when she is in DC, but her house doesn’t have a lot of protection, Lake said at a campaign event.
Donald Trump Jr., meanwhile, shared an image on social media of a hammer and a pair of underwear with the words “Got my Paul Pelosi Halloween costume ready.”
Nevertheless, some prominent Republicans, including Senate Minority LeaderMitch McConnell, have denounced the attack, while others, including former President Donald Trump, have offered a more restrained response.
Politics in the U.S. is not only dangerous but also poses a serious threat to democracy as another election looms.
It is premature to link any specific piece of political rhetoric to what transpired as this version of events will be tested in court. The incident leaves politicians who hate others with no reason to apologize or take responsibility for their words.
It seems like the most unusual result of an assault on the speaker is the creation of their own conspiracy theories. Once again, a gusher of falsehoods and wild, malicious misinformation circulating on social media and on the ideological right is creating an alternative reality meant to blur truth, prevent accountability and to further pollute political discourse.
The elevation of these conspiracies and commentary on the internet was not restricted to the fringes on the internet, it also came from the likes of one of Donald Trump’s sons and a Republican who is seeking the governorship of Arizona. Lake made fun of the security at Paul Pelosi’s home. America has a history of political violence and it is troubling that anyone would find humor in a physical attack.
The politics of violence and harassment have been swamping modern politics for some time. It happened less than two years after the violent insurrection at the US Capitol over Trump’s false claims of a stolen election. The arrest of a man who was charged with attempting to murder a conservative Supreme Court Justice came a few months later. This came five years after GOP House Minority Whip Steve Scalise was shot at a congressional baseball practice. And it’s less than 12 years since Democratic Rep. Gabby Giffords was left with a brain injury after she was shot in the head in Tucson, Arizona.
It was against a backdrop of tension surrounding next week’s elections that the attack was made on Paul Pelosi. Earlier this summer, former Georgia poll worker Ruby Freeman searingly told the House select committee investigating January 6, 2021, that there was now nowhere she felt safe after getting drawn in to Trump’s voter fraud conspiracies and asked, “Do you know how it feels to have the president of the United States target you?”
Paging about the Capitol: Paul Pelosi’s Facebook Attack on President Donald Trump and the Executive Director of the Oath Keepers
A Washington Post poll taken around the anniversary of the insurrection in January found, meanwhile, that 34% of Americans – and 40% of Republicans – said violence against the government is sometimes justified.
“Just last year, we have seen threats against Congress people and their families went up to 9,500, which is double what we have seen ever before in our history.”
Donald Trump Jr. retweeted a conspiracy theory social media post featuring a hammer, as though the ordeal suffered by Paul Pelosi, who is still in the hospital, was funny. The new owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, retweeted and deleted a similar post, raising the possibility that one of the world’s newest social media gatekeepers might end up exacerbating an already toxic political culture.
On Monday evening investigators in San Francisco moved to debunk a Conspiracy theory that Paul Pelosi knew his attacker and was in a relationship with him.
The core of our democracy has been attacked and it must be written off by a crazy person. What our leaders say matters,” Ed Davis, a former Boston police commissioner, said on “CNN Newsroom” on Monday.
In an interview, Trump said that what happened was a terrible thing, but it was also a sign of rising crime in American cities.
The House January 6 committee has already shown how Trump’s incitement before and after that day convinced those who attacked the Capitol they were doing what he wanted. That impression was further underlined on Monday when a former member of the Oath Keepers extremist group told a jury that after the election, he felt a “sense of desperation and hopelessness” because he believed Trump’s claims that fraud was committed in the 2020 election.
“I guess I was acting like a traitor against my own government,” said Graydon Young, the first Oath Keeper to plead guilty to conspiracy in connection to January 6.

Reply to Speaker Pelosi’s Anomalous Response to “Comment on ‘Sinful’ Speech by Youngkin on Facebook and Twitter”
His comments underscored the power of the inflammatory rhetoric coming from leaders like Trump, who have appeared to offer tacit encouragement for political violence.
She said it was sad to see people believe that it is okay to use violence when expressing their political views.
At the end of the day, Youngkin really wanted to make a statement about how awful Speaker Pelosi’s husband was. I didn’t do a good job.
Youngkin should still be applauded for saying sorry, even if he was a little late. His behavior stands out compared to how other members of his party are acting.
Does the Glass in Pelosi’s House Have a Broken Glass? The Anthropic Response to Lake’s Joke about the Interaction Between Amy and Donald Trump
The tape, of course, shows Lake making light of the situation. And the crowd (and the moderator) laughing. Lake’s response to that laughter? “Hey, I don’t control people, buddy. I don’t tell people what to do. I can take responsibility for myself, but I can not take responsibility for others.
Of course, had she not been joking, Lake could have, in the moment, told the crowd that. Something along the lines of, “This isn’t a laughing matter.” She didn’t.
Donald Trump, as he so often does, latched on to a conspiracy theory suggesting, wrongly, that the glass in Pelosi’s house was broken from the inside. “It’s weird things going on in that household in the last couple of weeks The former president did not give a reason.
